Markets Kick Off 2024 Digesting Gains Seen in the Fourth Quarter: Market Commentary from Cabana’s CEO – January 9, 2024

Happy New Year, everybody! Let’s make this one the best ever. I am going to focus on gratitude for all the amazing people in my life, not the least of which is my family who love me and support me unconditionally. I am blessed. I hope everyone can do a little bit of the same to start the year. In this day and age, it is so easy to see only the dark and negative, which is always pulling at us. The truth is, the light is much stronger if we only stop to see and feel it.

The stock and bond markets are currently digesting some of the gains we saw during the last two months of 2023, and this is to be expected. Markets do not go straight up, even in new bull markets. From where I sit, it is two steps forward and one step back as money moves from overbought sectors to those that have been left behind. We are seeing some of that now as money leaves the big tech darlings of last year and relocates in sectors like healthcare.

The bond market is grappling with the possibilities of multiple rate cuts over the next 12 months. This is a dynamic process whereby continued strong economic data is balanced against the fear of renewed inflation. Right now, the “smart money” says the Federal Reserve is finished hiking rates and will begin cutting by the second quarter as labor and growth pressures moderate. If this is the case, bonds could have a great year after their worst period in U.S. history. It likely means stocks will have a solid year as well. As an all-asset manager, I am hopeful and ready.

At Cabana, we have worked hard over the past several months and have new solutions and what I believe to be ever-improving portfolios up to bat. We will be doing webinars later this month for our family office clients as well as our advisor partners. Look for notices and invites and always feel free to contact us for more information.

We are currently in our Transitional Bullish Scene and our Target Beta, Target Drawdown and Target Leading Sector portfolios are allocated accordingly.

Key terms:

  • A bull market is a market that is on the rise and where the economy is sound; while a bear market exists in an economy that is receding, where most stocks are declining in value (Investopedia.com).
  • Big Tech, also known as the Tech Giants, are the largest information technology companies.
