The Week in Review: Market Commentary from Cabana’s CEO – August 13, 2018

A snapshot of last week’s market performance and what to watch in the week ahead from Chadd Mason, Cabana CEO and co-founder.

Last week brought with it great earnings reports from companies here in the U.S. and a test of the January highs by the S&P 500, followed by upside breakouts in the Dow Industrial and Transportation Indices. The 10-year Treasury note climbed all the way back up to nearly 3% in response to demand side growth prospects, coupled with continued full employment domestically. As soon as I was ready to watch a year-end rally begin, we announced more tariffs to come on China and crushing sanctions on Turkey. These actions of course sent international bond and equity markets into another free-fall as their respective currencies dropped relative to the U.S. dollar. This same scenario has occurred no less than three times over the past eight weeks. While in the short term we see U.S. equities outperform and remain positive for the year, long term, we need foreign markets to participate for the bull market to continue. Last week I mentioned the interrelated nature of world markets and the need for markets to work together to achieve full potential. What we see now is a bit like turning off the internet because we don’t like some of the information being made available there. In my opinion, the horse is way too far out of the barn for us to unwind the investments that are in place based upon many years of a worldwide economy. To assume that everyone will not be affected when huge trade partners and their respective economies stumble is naive to say the least. I did some research on this issue and have confirmed that during the recovery from each correction in the U.S. stock market since the bull market began nine years ago, foreign stocks participated and supported our move to new highs. That is simply not occurring here given the current political and policy environment. If foreign markets are not allowed to catch up, I believe we are running the risk of a recession before we see new highs again. These are of course just my thoughts and at Cabana we do not take risks based on a hunch. We will stay true to our system. We remain moderately bullish.
