Market insight and a highlight of Cabana’s year-to-date performance

Cabana’s six portfolios range from “Conservative” to “Aggressive” and include an income strategy portfolio. Performance is as of market close June 26, 2017 and is presented net of advisory fees and commissions.

All portfolios were down slightly for the week ranging from +0.94% (Balanced) to 0.23% (Alpha Income).

Portfolios were down slightly for the week ranging from -.58% (Growth) to essentially flat (Conservative). We are continuing to see volatility in the Nasdaq 100 led by Amazon, Google, Apple etc. These companies have gotten so large that their performance effects the broader markets. It is hard to imagine profit taking in the tech sector not bleeding over into the S&P 500. As we all know selling begets more selling. Without boring anyone with economic theory and the cause and effect of inter-sector selling on corporate finance, suffice to say that fear of losses, or even profit taking in one area, has an effect on investor behavior in other areas.

I reviewed a chart of the Nasdaq today and saw that through the end of May 2017, it was up 40% over the past year! That is a phenomenal run and absolutely justifies a correction of some type. Even without the very real concerns over continued political stagnation and anemic GDP growth, a significant pullback is warranted and healthy. Do not be surprised if it also results in a pullback in other equity sectors. I have pointed out many times over the past weeks that this equity market has got to eventually break one way or another. It makes sense that the leader on the way up would also lead on the way down. We may be getting a taste of that now. Fortunately, we don’t have to make a prediction, but simply stick with our discipline and remain hedged with inverse and non-correlated assets. If growth and high beta equities sell off, defensive asset classes like corporate grade bonds, treasuries, utilities and staples should do well. We remain bullish…for now.

Year-to-date net-of-fees performance:
CONSERVATIVE: +7.61%
MODERATE: +8.73%
BALANCED: +10.64%
GROWTH: +8.64%
AGGRESSIVE: +8.37%
ALPHA INCOME: 3.51%

Performance is presented net of advisory fees and commissions (Conservative – Aggressive is presented net of 3% fees from January 1, 2017 – February 28, 2017 and 2% beginning March 1, 2017; Alpha Income is presented net of 2% fees)
